Shells and ancient fossils, especially sharks' teeth, still wash up on the beach to thrill the sharp-eyed while strolling the sands. How proudly we campers used to show off our collections of these treasures.
The mile and a half drive from St. Leonard that was once a dirt road through a forest is now lined with houses. The cliffs and beach have receded somewhat. But here -- "high above the glistening waters" of the Bay, as we once sang -- the same sense of tranquillity and timelessness awaits today's vacationers as it did yesterday's campers.
Perched on a cliff with a lovely view of the Chesapeake Bay, these rustic wood cabins offer a delightful getaway only a few hours from Washington, DC. Matoaka Cabins is the successor of Camp Matoaka, a private girls' camp (not, however, a Scout camp, as a few other reviews incorrectly state). As a former camper, I remember those days with nostalgia.
I would recommend Matoaka Cabins for families in particular. It could be a "jumping-off point" for further exploration of other points of interest in southern Maryland. Each cabin has lights, bathrooms, and cooking facilities, quite a difference from our camp days. Barbeque grills are available outside.
Since the camp's closing many decades ago, several generations of the same family have run the property. They have lovingly preserved the ambience of the camp, and even some of its visual heritage. They have made the cabin stay, even though rather primitive, a wonderful experience for those who are ready to discover the joys of "time out and away."
I intended on staying a week, left after one night. It was very old and not kept up. On the first day, the area in front of the cabin was filled with cars parked for the day. The furniture looked as though it was left out for a couple of rains. We didn't touch the dressers. The refrigerator was half covered on rust and was turned off. In the lower bins, someone had left strawberries and grapes that were covered in mold, just gross even that wasn't cleaned out. Moths and mosquitos everywhere because of the holes in the dirty screens and spaces between the wood. When someone takes a gentle step, the whole place shook. I had to pay 220.00 for the one night even though they didn,t have my reservation on file. There is not hot water for the kitchen or bathroom sink. Only the primitive shower. This place would be nice if they just put some effort into maintaining the cabins, such as cleaning and replacing screens, ancient appliances and the cardboard under the mattresses. I waited to see if they were going to cash my check and they did so this review is warranted. We were not there 24 hours. They brought us a grill to use, it still had the charcoal half burned and a filthy grill rack. You are not getting a deal here, you get less than what you pay for.
Great to stay. There is no environment control, so it's more like camping but with a bed. Does have microwave and power outlets. Very close to its private beach
Assuming you seek a rustic stay in nature, I think the only real challenge -- other than mosquitoes -- is the jellyfish, also known as sea nettles. Why God created these nuisances, beautiful as they are with their long trailing streamers, is a question I still ponder. But we campers braved them every day in our swimming classes.
A very old rustic Girl Scouts camp converted to a campground with rental cabins and primitive camping. clean beach great for getting a tan, surf fishing just looking for seashells and fossils. Owners are very nice and accommodating.
We liked to think that Pocahontas, also known as Matoaka, might have walked these lands. Whether that is true or not, the area is filled with fascinating Native American history that can be explored. So too the area's rich bird, animal, and marine life.
This is my favorite beach on the Bay. It's just a thin strip of sand between the cliffs and the water -- the farther down the beach you walk, the thinner it gets. But there's plenty of room for a picnic blanket, it's almost never crowded, and having the cliffs behind you means it's shady in the afternoon. The cabins are no-frills, but it's nice to have early morning beach access for sunrise. Only downside is the sea nettle invasion that usually begins some time in July.
